What They Are and Why They Matter
Every thought, emotion, memory, and action begins with activity inside your brain.

The Four Primary Brainwaves

Delta Brainwaves
(0.5–4 Hz)
Delta waves are the slowest brainwaves.

They are most active during deep, restorative sleep and play an important role in physical recovery and restoration.

When delta activity appears at inappropriate times while someone is awake, it may interfere with alertness and concentration.
Theta Brainwaves
(4–8 Hz)
Theta waves are associated with creativity, memory, imagination, and the transition between wakefulness and sleep.

Everyone produces theta activity.
​
However, excessive theta activity in certain brain regions may be associated with difficulty maintaining attention or staying mentally engaged.

This is one reason theta patterns are often discussed in relation to ADHD.
Alpha Brainwaves
(8–12 Hz)
Alpha waves are often present during calm, relaxed awareness.

They help the brain shift between focused attention and relaxation.
​
Healthy alpha activity allows people to remain calm while still being mentally available.

When alpha regulation is disrupted, some individuals may experience increased stress, difficulty relaxing, or trouble transitioning into restful states.
Beta Brainwaves
(13–30 Hz)
Beta waves are associated with active thinking, problem-solving, concentration, and focused attention.

During healthy brain function, beta activity supports:

Too much or too little beta activity in certain areas may contribute to challenges involving attention, emotional regulation, or stress response.

Why Brainwaves Matter
