What Happens During Your First Neurofeedback Appointment?
Starting something new can feel intimidating—especially when it involves your brain.

One of the questions we hear most often at PeakBalance Neurofeedback is:

"What should I expect during my first appointment?"

Our goal is to make the process comfortable, educational, and personalized from the very beginning. Rather than rushing into treatment, we take the time to understand your goals, explain the process, and gather the information needed to create a neurofeedback plan that's tailored to you.

Here's what your first visit typically looks like.
STEP 1: Getting to Know You

Your first appointment begins with a conversation.

We'll discuss:

-
What brought you to PeakBalance
-
Your current concerns and goals
-
Your medical and mental health history
-
Previous treatments you've tried
-
Questions you have about neurofeedback

Whether you're seeking support for ADHD, anxiety, PTSD, substance use, sleep, or executive function challenges, understanding your experience helps guide the next steps.

This conversation is also an opportunity for you to get to know us. We encourage questions throughout the process.
STEP 2: QEEG Brain Mapping
If appropriate for your care plan, the next step is QEEG brain mapping.

A quantitative EEG (QEEG) records your brain's electrical activity using comfortable sensors placed on your scalp.

The process is:

-
Non-invasive
-
Comfortable
-
Medication-free
-
Painless

The sensors do not send electricity into your brain. They simply record brainwave activity while you relax.

This information helps us better understand how your brain is functioning and provides valuable insight for developing personalized neurofeedback training protocols.

STEP 3: Reviewing Your Brain Map

Once the assessment is complete, Jenessa reviews the information gathered during the QEEG.

Rather than relying only on colorful brain maps or automated reports, she also reviews the underlying EEG data and combines that information with your clinical history, symptoms, and goals.

This allows treatment planning to be guided by both objective data and clinical interpretation.

Because every brain is different, every treatment plan should be different too.
STEP 4: Your First Neurofeedback Session
Many people are surprised by how relaxing neurofeedback feels.

During a typical session:

-
Small sensors are placed on your scalp.
-
Brainwave activity is monitored in real time.
-
You'll watch a movie, animation, or other visual feedback while the system monitors your brain activity.

You don't need to consciously "do" anything.

The brain responds naturally to the feedback it receives.

Most people simply relax and allow the training to happen.

STEP 5: Questions and Education

Education is an important part of every appointment.

Throughout your care, Jenessa explains:

-
What your brain map shows
-
Why certain training protocols are being used
-
How your treatment may evolve over time
-
What changes to watch for between sessions

Our goal is not only to provide neurofeedback but also to help you better understand how your brain functions.

Many clients tell us that simply understanding their brain helps them feel more confident and engaged throughout treatment.
STEP 6: What Happens After Your Appointment?
Before you leave, we'll discuss:

-
Your recommended training schedule
-
What to expect over the coming weeks
-
Any questions you still have
-
Next appointment scheduling

Neurofeedback works through repetition and consistency.

Most people complete a series of sessions over time, allowing the brain to gradually reinforce healthier patterns.

We'll continue monitoring your progress and make adjustments as needed throughout the process.

How Long Does the Process Take?
Every person's treatment plan is different.

Some individuals begin noticing changes early in training, while others require more time.

Your overall timeline depends on factors such as:

-
Your goals
-
The concerns being addressed
-
Consistency with sessions
-
How your brain responds to training

Rather than following a fixed schedule for everyone, treatment is adjusted based on your individual progress.
Our Approach Is Personal
One of the things that makes PeakBalance Neurofeedback different is that you'll work directly with Jenessa Rudell, LICSW, LADC, BCN-L, QEEG-DL throughout your care.

From your initial consultation through your neurofeedback sessions, you'll have direct access to the clinician developing and monitoring your treatment—not simply someone operating equipment.

That ongoing relationship allows questions to be answered in real time and helps ensure your care continues to reflect your goals and progress.
